We will be adding to this list when ever new tips arise, if you have any tips let us know.
- Dog hairs - use a rubber glove to remove dog hairs, it works better than a clothes brush in fact it work better than any other method I know.
- Teething - when your puppy is teething sometimes the old teeth are just hanging on in there. Use a pair of old tights (you not in them of course) and play tug with the puppy it often manages to help the loose teeth to drop out, and your puppy wont hate you for it.
- Doggy odour - Chihuahuas have very little smell they usually smell of the shampoo you last bathed them with. Occasionally you will have toilet accidents that need cleaning up. I love to use zoflora disinfectant, I put a small amount into a squirty bottle, top it up with water, then 'hey presto', a fresh smelling room in an instant. They come in a variety of flower smells my favourite is flowershop, its really lovely.
- Dropped ears - I found this tip on another site, occasionally you get a pup that even at 6 months those ears do not want to go up, well you cut a chunk of sponge large enough to fit the ear, then tape it to the ear using elastoplast. (Make sure there is no grease or oily residue, or you tape will come off. You should keep the sponge in place for about a month, this will help the cartilage to support itself. You need to replace the Elastoplast regularly. (Let me know if it works).
- Water bowls - If there is anything I've learnt is that you need a good sturdy and HEAVY water bowl, accidents happen to easily it the bowl is light weight, and its usually me that kicks it over, not the dogs.
- Dog bedding - If you are like me your dogs have the run of the house but at night time they go to bed in their carriers where they cant get up to mischief Well I usually go to my local second hand baby store and buy there second hand cot sheets and blankets, often I get some for free the ones that are marked and cant be resold. They are able to cuddle up in soft sheets and blankets.
- Bitches with Milk fever - If your bitch get milk fever (eclampsia) you need to stop the pups from feeding from her, a new-born babies vest is a great help. Make sure you put a hole in for their tail you can also tape around the area just in front of the back legs in case any pups try to wriggle in for a sneaky feed. This way your bitch can be with her pups without the worry of her getting any worse. (please do see your vet if you think she has milk fever) This is a measure you can't take after she has been treated to prevent any further episodes.
- Dog habits - If you are teaching your dog to use a litter tray in the house, then remember dogs like to cock their leg on something. Fill an empty pop bottle with either water or sand and wrap it in some newspaper. This way your dog has somewhere to cock his leg without getting into trouble.
- Pooper scoopers- don't waist time and money on popper scoopers just use a plastic bag with your hand in it pick up the poop pull the bag over your hand tie a knot in it and dispose of it in the nearest bin.
- Vets bills - If you do not want to take out pet insurance (which is a very good idea) try to put £10.00 a month away in a doggy fund this way you will have money put away for those unforeseen circumstances.
- Give your Chihuahua chew sticks as this will help keep their teeth healthy and their breath fresh. An apple is also a good breath freshener.
- Lonely pet - if you need to go out for an hour or so why not leave the radio or television on for company, better still get another Chihuahua
